Method to find bibliographic software

I often like to look at alternative software solutions out there because you can find newer, better featured, up to date, less expensive, alternative OS software titles when you do a little side research on it.

I ran a search on google for ‘endnote alternative’ 1). This gave me the first listing, which was a very good forum with user suggestions from 2007 of alternative software. Overall, there were 8 alternatives listed throughout the informative forum discussion, with 3 of them being serious contenders for my choice.

Software Factors

The factors I am looking for in the Biblio software:

  • Integration with current data import standards (endnote, bibtex, .ris)
  • Ability to add data to each record (for custom referencing/notes in project)
  • Integration with other cutting-edge tech resources and features
  • Ease of use
  • Excellent UI
  • Cheap, free, or trial software

Google Scholar

Runs off of books, papers, research, etc. Can output findings into BibTex or EndNote, among other lesser known outputs. You have to export each finding individually.

SSRN Electronic Library

Went to UMBC Research Port, browsed databases by subject type, selected ‘Economics’, got back a list of half a dozen databases or so, picked the database with the most economic based name. Database chosen lead to “Social Science Research Network”. Ran a simple search on ‘market prediction’.

Possibly no export option for bibliography support. May have to manually add papers from this resource, into my bibliography list.
